DevOps Engineer

Employer: Our Community

Type: Full Time Sector: Social Enterprise Job Level: Mid Level

  • Escape the corporate grind and join a new-style company - good pay and genuinely flexible conditions without the crap
  • Critical role supporting existing features - and building new ones - in a well-established SaaS platform
  • Based in Melbourne CBD-fridge in brand new sun-drenched offices

About the role

Our Community is an established and innovative B Corporation that produces various online software products, including SmartyGrants - a market-leading SaaS solution for administering and applying for grants.

Our Community's central mission is to build stronger communities by providing useful technology and education for those working at the grassroots. We are looking for a skilled team member who shares our values and goals.

As a DevOps Engineer you'll be integral to our team, helping us improve and automate how we work. The production environment needs to be monitored, our developer toolset needs to be supported, our deployments can benefit from further automation, and we're sure there's other optimisation opportunities that we won't have thought of, but you will.

Key responsibilities:

  • Setting up, configuring and supporting the tools and infrastructure used by the development team
  • Manage production and non-production environment infrastructure
  • Managing our automated builds, releases and deployments to production and non-production environments
  • Identifying opportunities to automate and streamline our development, testing and release processes
  • Managing a combination of on-premise and cloud environments
  • Monitoring application performance, and improving alerting and reporting tools and processes
  • Creating and maintaining coding standards to be used by the developers
  • Mentoring and coaching team members in adopting DevOps principles and processes
  • Participating in planning and decision-making and other tasks as required

As a small company, we offer roles with breadth and genuine flexibility - you're not a small cog in a big machine; you'll be a key part of the team. Similarly, we like our team members to be flexible.

Essential Skills

  • Java deployment environments (Tomcat, nginx or equivalents)
  • Linux (or *nix) and scripting (bash, python, groovy)
  • Installation and configuration of CI tools (Atlassian Bamboo or similar)
  • Atlassian BitBucket (or other git-based source repositories, flows, branching practices, etc)
  • AWS Console and APIs (EC2, ELB, Lambda, RDS, S3, etc)
  • Log management (eg AWS CloudWatch, Splunk, GreyLog, etc)
  • Java build tools (Ant/maven or Gradle)
  • NewRelic (or other performance/monitoring tools)
  • Problem solving and attention to detail
  • Time management, organisational skills and excellent written and verbal communication
  • A belief in and commitment to our Manifesto.

Highly Desirable Skills

  • Java coding experience
  • Experience troubleshooting Linux/Java application stability and performance
  • Familiarity with Docker/Docker-compose
  • JUnit, Selenium and other testing frameworks
  • Postgres or other relational databases
  • Security best-practices
  • Experience with performance testing

Key Details

Area: SmartyGrants Development team

Manager: Jessica Rutherford, Director SmartyGrants Delivery

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, but we are very open to flexible working arrangements

Who are we?

Our Community is an established, leading, award-winning Accredited B Corporation that provides advice, connections, training and easy-to-use tech tools for people and organisations working to build stronger communities. We work with grantmakers/funders (government and philanthropic), donors (individual and institutional), enlightened businesses, community builders, and not-for-profit organisations.

Our B Corp accreditation recognises that we meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability (including to our own employees). We love diversity, we love equality, and we adore technology. We question tradition. We accept increments but strive for revolution.

We have an ambitious agenda; we're not constrained by bureaucracy or boundaries; we're not interested in internal politics or egos, just in contributing something useful to society. We don't have layers of management, and we don't want our team members to be a cog in the wheel of a soul-destroying corporate system. We will give you plenty of opportunity to make Our Community platforms your own, and for you to be as excited about their potential as we are.

Our suite of socially useful and commercially attractive platforms include SmartyGrants, the most widely used online grants management system in Australia and New Zealand, as well as GiveNow, Australia's first online donations platforms, plus several more.

What can we offer?

You'll get to work in a socially-minded product company that has the agility of a start-up without the headaches.

  • A full-time position, but we are genuinely committed to people having a life and we are very open to flexible working arrangements
  • New art-filled, sun-drenched offices on the CBD fringe, set within a co-working space for socially minded organisations and data scientists
  • A 27" Retina iMac on your sit-down/stand-up desk, running your choice of MacOS or Windows
  • A flexible, diverse and inclusive workplace
  • The opportunity to use your powers for good!
